Central Otago is the southern most wine region in the world. Central Otago is dominant in the wine industry and has been the fastest expanding wine region over the last decade. Vines have also been planted in the Waitaki Valley in North Otago through the Cromwell Basin, Queenstown, and Bannockburn through to Alexandra. North Otago’s limestone soils differ from Central Otago’s slate and schist and this region is renowned for its Pinot Noirs.
Climate : Hot summers, cold winters and extremely dry autumns
Soils : Heavy deposits of mica and schists in silt loams
Main Grape Varieties : Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
