Wineries and Vineyards of the Northland Region.

Northland stretches out over 300 kilometres of rolling, hilly countryside. It has an almost sub-tropical climate with high rainfall and humidity and warm winters. Northland is the oldest but smallest wine region in New Zealand and is best known for its reds.

Climate: High rainfall and humidity with mild winters favour red wine production.

Soils : Vineyards are mainly sited on gentle slopes. Soils vary from shallow clay over sandy-clay subsoils to free draining volcanic structures.

Main Grape Varieties : Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Pinotage.
