Wineries and Vineyards of the Gisborne Region

Gisborne is New Zealand’s third largest wine region promoting itself as the “Chardonnay capital of New Zealand”. It has limited lowland areas suitable for viticulture so grape growing is mainly confined to the 20,000 hectares at Poverty Bay. It is one of the sunniest regions of New Zealand and has recorded some of the highest temperatures which ripen grapes up to six weeks ahead of southern regions.

Climate : Warm temperatures with frequent autumn rainfall
Soils : From alluviall loams over sandy or volcanic subsoils of moderate fertility
Main Grape Varieties : Chardonnay, Muller Thurgau, Muscat varieties, Semillon, Merlot and Pinot Noir.
