Black Estate – Waipara Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

“If We Seem Friendly and Obliging, That’s the Wine Talking.”

Recently while at Pegasus Bay Wines I had the pleasure of meeting Penelope Naish from Black Estate, a family owned vineyard on a 16 hectare property, of which 8 hectares is vineyard. Planted in 1994, the vineyard rests on the warm sunny gentle slopes of Omihi in the Waipara Valley, with a northerly aspect and at an elevation of 80-100 metres above sea level. and since then I’ve also had the pleasure of tasting 3 of their wonderful Waipara wines.

4 hectares of Mendoza Chardonnay and 4 hectares of Pinot Noir vines’ ungrafted roots penetrate deep in to the clay and limestone soils in which they grow, producing intense wines completely expressive of this site. Since 2008 they have access to some locally grown grapes to indulge another of their passions “Riesling.”

Black Estate wines are hand crafted using artisan techniques and a dedication to creating exceptional Waipara Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Nicholas Brown - Winemaking & Viticulture Consultant has a gentle and guiding wine-making philosophy observing the vines throughout the seasons to see how they react to differing conditions. The results are very fine expressions of the Waipara wine region.

2010 Black Estate Omihi Series Chardonnay Waipara NZ
The chardonnay was bright pale golden in colour with a sweet floral nose of stone-fruit & pineapple and  hint of spice & toastiness, quite rich and textural on the palate, grapefruit citrus fruit / acid balance, subtle nutty oak, juicy mouth watering finish. I think this is drinking  quite nicely now but will develop well with a little more age. 85 pts

2010 Black Estate Pinot Noir Waipara NZ
Medium colored Raspberry / Garnet in the glass, soft berries, some earthiness and herbal notes on the nose, lovely integrated palate with nice red berry fruit and velvety tannins, still some fresh acidity, although I found the finish a little “dry” but persistent – perhaps opened too soon. Would love to see this Pinot Noir again in 2-3 years. 88 pts

2010 Black Estate Omihi Series Pinot Noir Waipara NZ
Medium / deep ruby hue with fruit, spice and a mineral earthiness on the nose. Dark plums and rich berry fruit on the palate, for me it still felt a little green acid predominant up front, but smooth the silky tannins and a great finish left me wanting another glass but as with the Waipara Pinot really needs more time to show it’s true potential. 89 pts

My thanks to Pen and the team for giving me the opportunity to experience these wines. To find out more about Black Estate and buy some wine, visit their website, like their Facebook Page or follow Pen Naish on Twitter.

Ata Rangi – NZ Wine Website of the Week

Ata Rangi

Ata Rangi, meaning “dawn sky” or “new beginning” is a small New Zealand winery with a big reputation for serious Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio – Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. Clive planted his first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area.

Pinot Noir is undoubtedly their flagship wine, and in 2010 was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or “Grand Cru of New Zealand”. With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is well established in 25 international markets and has an enviable reputation as one of the New World’s most respected Pinot Noir producers.

Ata Rangi Sign in Autumn

Ata Rangi is one of only a handful of ISO 14001 accredited wineries in the world. This management standard, achieved over 15 years ago, calls for continual commitment to improve on practises which impact on the environment.

The vineyard and winery are also founding members of SWNZ (Sustainable Winegrowing of New Zealand) – a voluntary, industry-wide initiative developed to provide a ‘best practice’ model of environmental practices in both vineyard and winery. Ata Rangi is currently in transition to fully organic status.

Recently Ata Rangi were awarded Five Stars in The Great New Zealand Pinot Noir Classification 2012 by Matthew Jukes’ (UK) and Tyson Stelzer (Australia) The Fifth Great New Zealand Pinot Noir Classification is Matthew Jukes’ (UK) and Tyson Stelzer’s (Australia) annual classification of New Zealand’s best Pinot Noir producers.

As well as Pinot Noir Ata Rangi also produce Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling, a Summer Rose, and ‘Celebre’, a Bordeaux blend. To find out more about Ata Rangi and purchase their wine online visit their Website or Like their Facebook Page.

Harakeke Farm – NZ Wine Website of the Week

HarakekeFarm - Hand Made Wines with Purity
“Hand Made Wines with Purity”

Harakeke Farm is a small family owned vineyard in the Harakeke district of Upper Moutere, Nelson. Joanne Costar & Andrew Sutherland make small quantities of Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from their 3 hectare vineyard – a truly family owned boutique vineyard.

The farm consists of 3 Hectares of grapes and an expanding range of fruit trees and they harvested grapes for the first time in April of 2010 for the Harakeke Farm label. It has taken over 5 years from planting the first vines to harvesting the grapes and turning them into the Harakeke 2010 Pinot Noir, 2010 Chardonnay and 2011 Riesling.

In addition to farming the productive areas of their 13 hectare property they are also embarking on a long term planting project to reintroduce native plants like flax (Harakeke), Cabbage trees, Totara, Kanuka and Manuka to the steeper hill sides and swampy gully floors.

Harakeke is the Maori name for NZ Flax or Phormium Tenax. They have chosen this name not only because it is where the vineyard is but also because they are gradually replanting the low lying areas of their farm with Harakeke along with other natives.

You can learn more about Harakeke Farm and purchase wine online by visiting their Website or by liking their Facebook page.

Spade Oak Vineyard – NZ Wine Website of the Week

Spade Oak Vineyard
Passion, family vision and the desire to put that passion into their own label has seen Eileen and Steve Voysey produce Spade Oak Wine and Heart of Gold wines from the central valley region of Gisborne. The Voysey family-owned vineyard specialises in exciting grape varieties and wine styles, capturing their soils, sunshine, passion and labour into aromatic essence and complex flavours designed to make your occasion memorable.

From their own vineyard which is located in the centre of the Gisborne flats, they can proudly lay claim to employing a mix of “old world” traditional techniques with the narrow rows, low fruit zone, natural wild yeast, time and “new world” techniques such as gentle fining, filtration and reductive handling. Combining red and white varieties that are complimented to suit each other, express and explore the potential of the region, is very much in the foreground of their planning.

Eileen and Steve Voysey

They have taken varieties from the Burgundy and Champagne regions, Rhone, Austria, Spain and Southern France regions with a focus on new varieties for Gisborne. Current plantings consist of: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, Petit Mansang, Marsanne, St Laurent, Grüner Veltliner, Tempranillo and Albarino.

It’s a family affair, with their children helping out over vintage and Eileen’s father living right on the property and always keen to lend a helping hand too. The vineyard techniques have provided cost effective methods and environmentally conscious practises which supports their membership to Sustainable Winegrowing NZ. Producing single vineyard wines enables complete control over quality.

Ataahua Wines from Waipara with Stephanie

It was brilliant to have Stephanie Henderson-Grant attend the club to show us her wonderful Ataahua Wines and what makes these wines so special. I met Stephanie at the Ohoka Farmers Market and on tasting her wines knew straight away that club members would really appreciate these wines made with passion from the beautiful Waipara region.

Stephanie from Ataahua Wines in Waipara

Stephanie from Ataahua Wines in Waipara

Nestled between traditional pastoral and cropping based farms, adjoining vineyards and the Waipara Domain lies Ataahua’s vineyards. First planted in the early 1980’s, the vineyard was originally part of Waipara Springs and the Hutt Creek Vineyards – among some of the earliest vineyards planted in the valley. Sheltered from the cooling easterly sea breezes by a range of limestone hills, the Waipara Valley enjoys the long warm dry summers that are ideal for wine growing.

Purchased in 1995 by Andrew Grant and Stephanie Henderson-Grant, the now named Ataahua vineyard is home to the Grant family. Following many years of involvement in the wine industry – including winemaking, wine sales and marketing, and business management – Andrew and Stephanie decided to follow a dream and began producing handcrafted wine from their own vineyard.

Sam Neill to Open Pinot Noir NZ 2013

Press Release: 5 March 5 2012

Sam Neill, winemaker, movie god and raconteur will open Pinot Noir NZ 2013 in Wellington next year, Chairman of the Board behind the event, Alastair Maling MW, announced as he opened registrations for the event.

“Sam was our first choice and we’re tickled pink because he’ll set the tone of “serious fun” over the four day event.”

Star of movies such as Jurassic Park, Dean Spanley and Reilly Ace of Spies, New Zealand born Sam established Pinot Noir producer Two Paddocks in Central Otago.

“The quality of Two Paddocks wine and his attachment to it, make Sam an optimistic man. He is inclined to see the glass in his right hand as never half empty, by the simple expedient of ensuring his left hand always holds a full bottle,” says Alastair.

“Sam gets his hands dirty and we’re trying to uncover the real work behind New Zealand’s fantastic Pinot Noirs which have beguiled the world.”

Pinot Noir NZ 2013 is the fifth such wine event and it has been called “one of the world’s most impressive wine events”.

“While we still set out to impress the look and feel is “kiwi laid back elegance” and we hope to engage our visitors with challenging talk, memorable food and of course unbeatable New Zealand Pinots,” Alastair says.

Registrations for Pinot Noir NZ 2013 are now open.

“This is exciting stuff. We have set up four days of Pinot workshops focusing on our five major Pinot regions and asking people to unearth the stories from the people behind our world class Pinot Noirs.”

Speakers already confirmed include Jasper Morris MW, Matt Kramer, Lisa Perotti Brown MW and Australia’s Mike Bennie.

More than 100 New Zealand Pinot producers have signed up to show their wares in Wellington from 28th – 31st January.

The first Pinot Noir Event was held in 2001. It was set up by a group of dedicated Pinot Noir producers (under the chairmanship of Richard Riddiford of Palliser Estate) to explore and celebrate the grape in New Zealand.

Held every three years in Wellington, Pinot Noir NZ has established a dedicated audience throughout the world and previous attendees include Jancis Robinson MW, Allen Meadows, Tim Atkin MW, Oz Clarke and James Halliday.

Ruth Pretty Catering has always pulled together a culinary programme including the very best Wellington restaurants using New Zealand’s finest produce.

The event is supported by New Zealand Winegrowers who regard it as a hero event in the New Zealand wine calendar.

CEO Philip Gregan says Pinot Noir NZ is a springboard for overseas visitors to experience the whole of the New Zealand wine story as they often continue their New Zealand trip to absorb other regions and grape varieties.

CharRees Vineyard – NZ Wine Website of the Week

CharRees Vineyard
CharRees is a small family owned boutique vineyard situated just off state highway one on southern edge of Ashburton, 1 hour from Christchurch. The CharRees vineyard story began in 2007 when Charles & Esma Hill’s visionary dream of owning a vineyard / restaurant became a reality when they bought an established vineyard on the outskirts of Ashburton in January 2007.

The vineyard which was established in 1999 now consists of 4000 Pinot Gris and 3500 Pinot Noir vines, and in 2008 they planted 1800 Riesling vines as well. Upon picking their first vintage in 2008 they have now established their own label “CharRees”. The name “CharRees” derives from the owners’ Christian names Charles & Esma plus daughters, Charlotte and Sheree.

CharRees aims for quality wines produced from their vineyards and Mid Canterbury’s climate helps the grapes mature slowly at a steady pace creating an ideal ripening environment. They are passionate about producing quality wine as opposed to quantity, hence they put a lot of love and labour into the vineyard.

With this in mind, the grapes from CharRees Vineyard are selectively hand harvested for optimum flavour from this terroir, and are then taken to their wine maker in Waipara. They won their first medal at the 2011 International Aromatic Wine Competition as part of the Canterbury A & P Show awarded a Bronze for their 2010 vintage Pinot Gris.

CharRees started cellar door sales in Dec 2009 with their 2008 vintage and have plans of setting up a restaurant in the near future. For information about the CharRees Vineyard, where they are or to purchase wine visit their website or like them on Facebook.

Bald Hills Pedigree Unmistakable

Press Release:

New Zealand Wine Best Pinot Noir at Sydney International Wine Competition 2012

Bald Hills Pedigree Unmistakable - Bannockburn NZ 27 February 2012

Amidst fierce competition Bald Hills Vineyard of Bannockburn Central Otago, has won the “Best Pinot Noir Wine of Competition” Trophy for 2012 announced on Saturday at the SIWC Awards Presentation Banquet at the Shangri-La Hotel for its Central Otago Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009.

Owners, Blair and Estelle Hunt are former Sydney residents whose love of wine led them to Central Otago where cool nights, warm days and low rainfall combines with light free-draining soils to provide near perfect growing conditions for the pinot noir grape. Planted in 1997, the boutique vineyard comprises some 7 hectares of vines, 5 of which are in various clones of pinot noir and the remainder in pinot gris and riesling.

“It is a huge honour to have been awarded the Trophy” said Dr Hunt. “Pinot Noir is now New Zealand’s second most planted variety and it is planted widely in Australia too. The competition for high awards is stiff. Awards like this open doors in this highly competitive economic environment in which we find ourselves.”

‘We know we sit on an excellent piece of land” he continued “and we see a vintage-by-vintage improvement in the wines as the vines gain some age”.
“This Trophy will sit proudly beside the six Trophies won by our celebrated 2005 Pinot Noir at the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge in London in 2007,” he said.

Bald Hills began entering the prestigious Sydney competition in 2007 and has since amassed five Blue Gold awards and three Top 100 awards, most of them for its Pinot Noir.

The SIWC’s unique approach to determining the ranking of wines which have progressed through initial elimination is to taste those wines with food, a method proven to be a reliable indicator of quality for merchants and the wine-drinking public alike.

Brennan Wines: NZ Wine Website of the Week

Brennan Wines - Gibbston, Central Otago

The Brennan Vineyards are situated in the dramatic Gibbston sub-region of Central Otago, New Zealand. The Brennans have always felt that Gibbston can offer the perfect conditions for producing their wines, bought the land in Gibbston in 1994 and began establishing the vineyard, planting some of the first vines in this region. Murray Brennan, Sean’s father, was born in Auckland and while studying at Otago University, he was drawn to Central Otago and Gibbston in particular. Over the following years Murray and his family kept their connection with Gibbston and Sean regularly visited the region from a very young age.

Sean Brennan launched the Brennan label with the intention of producing limited quantities of iconic wines that truly represent the potential of this exceptional wine region. Sean is winemaker for Brennan Wines, and insists on sourcing fruit only from his family vineyards. He has created Brennan Wines to produce limited quantities of exceptional wine that truly represent what this region has to offer. Their fruit is sourced entirely from the family vineyards and Sean maintains intimate control in the winery. At Brennan, they feel that the only way to produce wines of great integrity is to have complete control at every step.

When it is time to harvest Sean already has a good understanding of the vintage, having monitored the vines throughout the season. Careful consideration is given to each variety and the style of wine to be made from it. While the challenges of the environment are immense, the potential is even greater, and with an extreme perfectionist producing Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio and Gewurztraminer, the outcome has to be remarkable.

Peacock Sky Vineyard – Waiheke Island

Peacock Sky Vineyard, Waiheke Island, New Zealand
Many butterflies migrate over long distances, and butterflies also symbolize rebirth into a new life. Peacock Sky Vineyard owners Connie and Rob migrated thousands of miles to start their new life in the centre of Waiheke Island.

This picturesque vineyard is located high above the golden sands of Onetangi with commanding views across the beautiful Hauraki Gulf to Auckland City. Located in the centre of Waiheke Island with views across the Hauraki Gulf to Auckland, on New Zealand’s North Island, the vines are surrounded by lush native bush overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. The owners share their verdant home with a flock of wild peacocks from which the vineyard takes its name.

The Tasting Room is open to the public to sample their fine wines, each accompanied by a complimentary food pairing. Stay for a lunch platter and sit inside among their eclectic selection of antiques and wine related products, or relax outside at picnic tables overlooking the vineyard.

Enjoy their delightful nature trail that runs through peaceful native bush between the vineyard and their main facilities. Stroll along the trail and cross the small wooden bridge over one of the streams feeding the Cascades Waterfalls.

Stay with them at Cody’s Cottage, a modern two bedroom chalet with full kitchen with views across the vineyard and surrounding pasture, and sea views across the Hauraki Gulf towards Auckland, or at Maybelline’s Manor, a luxurious one bedroom apartment overlooking the vineyard. Peacock Sky can also host weddings in the vineyard or perhaps a business meeting or corporate retreat.

There’s a lot to experience at Peacock Sky Vineyard – to find out more visit their Website, like their Facebook Page or follow them on Twitter.

Locharburn Vineyard and Wines

Locharburn Vineyard and Wines

“Finely blended Central Otago wines, using the highest quality fruit grown in their own vineyard.”

Locharburn is a Central Otago venture realising the dream of owners Chris and Jenny Hill. For years, owning a vineyard was an unattainable dream Chris and Jenny would joke about with friends… until they succeeded in making it a reality late in 2004.

Named for the Locharburn stream which the vines and their home overlook, the 14ha sustainability accredited vineyard is planted on north-easterly facing terraces near the top of Lake Dunstan in Cromwell Basin. It is surrounded by panoramic alpine ranges. Towering directly behind the vineyard is Mount Pisa, to the east are the Dunstan ranges, and in the distance across the Upper Clutha River plateau you can see the beautiful St Bathans Mountains.

The unique microclimate of the terraces, Central Otago’s famed hot summers and long autumns let the grapes ripen slowly, yielding high-quality fruit with intense, complex flavours. Locharburn produce Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, the wines all crafted from grapes grown on this fully sustainable, single vineyard by award winning winemaker Carol Bunn.

These characterful wines express the unique microclimate of the Locharburn vineyard, along with the passion and hands-on care that go into their making. To find out more about Locharburn Vineyards and Wines and purchase their wine online, visit their Website like their Facebook Page or follow Jenny on Twitter.

Greystone Late Harvest Riesling 2009

Greystone Riesling 2009
Greystone Riesling 2009

Seeing as it’s The Summer of Riesling I thought what a better way to end the day but with a lovely bottle of the Greystone Late Harvest Riesling 2009 from the Waipara region. I looked at the 2011 Greystone Feather Star Riesling but opted to leave that just a little longer.

The 2009 Late Harvest was bright yellow-golden hues and quite viscous in the glass, floral in the nose with a little beeswax? sweet but not cloying on the palate even though the residual sugar is 102g/l. There’s lemon / lime acidity still evident though softened and honey & tropical fruit – a persistent juicy finish.

I like but am not a huge fan of late-harvest or sticky rieslings preferring them “dry and kero infused!” but this has a nice balance of fruit acid and sweetness which makes it a really well made wine and i enjoyed it a lot. I note on the Greystone website that this hasn’t been made since 2009 or is no longer available.

Alcohol: 9.4 % RRP: about NZ$25 (availability unknown): 91/100 Points
